For Clemson's first few midweek games, Sam Weatherly drew the start but with two games this week, the Tigers staff have decided to shake things up some.
RHP, Travis Marr (8.100 ERA, 2.100 WHIP) will take the mound on Tuesday against the Wofford Terriers (6-5 overall) with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Marr has made two appearances for Clemson this season, throwing for 3.1 innings. He's allowed six hits, three runs (all earned), issued one walk and struck out three batters.
He has thrown a total of 69 pitches; 43 strikes and 26 balls. He averages 20.7 pitches per inning and four per batter faced. Something he will look to improve on is retiring leadoff batters, having only retired two of the 17 he has faced in his limited action.
Pitching opposite him for the Terriers will be LHP, Jake Zoller (0-0, 3.00 ERA), who has made three appearances this season. He's allowed four hits, one earned run and issued four strikeouts and no walks.
For Wednesday's game against the Spartans of Michigan State, the Tigers have elected to go with RHP, Spencer Strider (1-0, 6.750 ERA, 1.375 WHIP).
On the season so far, Strider has made three appearances with a total of eight innings pitched. He has recorded a win and one save in his limited action on the mound.
Strider has allowed five hits, six runs (all earned), six free passes, two hit-by-pitches and struck out 13 of the 37 batters he has faced. He's thrown 156 total pitches; 95 strikes and 61 balls.
He is averaging 19.5 pitches per inning and 4.216 per batter faced. He has retired 12 batters in three or less pitches and recorded seven leadoff outs and four 123 innings.
There is significant room for improvement in his initial pitches. He has thrown only 18 first-pitch strikes against the 37 batters he's pitched against (49%). Getting ahead in the count and pounding the strike zone is what head coach Monte Lee preaches and harps on the most.
Clemson has the most significant depth in the pitching staff and bullpen that they've had in the Monte Lee era. They will hope to at least get four innings out of the starters but there are plenty of arms to go around for the Tigers as they look to continue their hot start to the season.
