Clemson drops first midweek game of the season to the Chanticleers

A walk-off left Clemson on the wrong end of a 9-5 defeat to Coastal Carolina on Tuesday. A rain delay pushed this game back from it's originally scheduled 6:00 start time to an 8:30 first pitch. The game was tied at five with Coastal Carolina batting in the bottom of the ninth when Lee Sponseller homered on a 2-2 count, scoring four runs.

Coastal Carolina took an early lead in the second inning. Matt Beaird singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.

In the top of the eighth inning, Clemson tied things up at five. Clemson scored three runs when Chris Williams homered.

Clemson scored four runs in the eighth inning. Clemson's offense in the inning came from a single by Patrick Cromwell and a home run by Williams.

Jay Causey was credited with the victory for Coastal Carolina. He allowed zero hits and zero runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out one and walking one. Davie Inman and Zach McCambley entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.

Carson Spiers took the loss for Clemson. He lasted one and one-third innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out one and walking one.

Holt Jones started the game for Clemson. He lasted one and one-third innings, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out two. Anthony Simonelli started the game for Coastal Carolina. He allowed two hits and one run over four innings, striking out two and walking one.

Clemson smacked two home runs on the day. Robert Jolly had a long ball in the second inning. Williams had a four bagger in the eighth inning.

Drew Wharton, Seth Beer, Williams, Cromwell, Logan Davidson, and Jolly all had one hit to lead Clemson.

Coastal Carolina scattered 11 hits in the game. Kieton Rivers, Seth Lancaster, and Beaird all managed multiple hits for Coastal Carolina. Coastal Carolina was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error. Kevin Woodall Jr. made the most plays with 12.
