With just over 73 miles separating them, many Clemson and Georgia fans would like to see the two football teams renew their annual rivalry. The Tigers and Bulldogs have faced off intermittently since 1897, with their most recent matchup in 2014.
On his Prowl & Growl tour in Greenwood, Dabo Swinney spoke with the media before the event on Monday.
Dabo Swinney said, “Oh yeah. Absolutely,” when asked if he would like to renew the rivalry. “It would be great for both fan bases. I’ve said that for a long time. We’re going to play somebody like that every year. We’re going to Texas A&M this year, and then they come to us. We’ve played Auburn a bunch of times. So, I think that would be great. I’m sure they’re going to play somebody big every year. To me, it would be great for the fan bases.”
Georgia leads the all-time series 42-18-4 over the Tigers. The Bulldogs took the last meeting in 2014 with a 45-21 victory in Athens.
The most memorable game in recent years between these two came in 2013. The opening weekend of the season saw ESPN’s College Gameday travel to Clemson for a sellout game to see the #8 Tigers host #5 Georgia.
Georgia held a 21-14 lead in the second quarter thanks to touchdowns by Todd Gurley, Keith Marshall, and Quayvon Hicks. It seemed that from that point to the final horn, it was Tajh Boyd’s game. The Clemson great threw two touchdowns and ran in two scores as well to take a 38-28 lead in the fourth quarter. Georgia didn’t give up though. With 1:19 left, Aaron Murray led the Bulldogs back and cut the lead to 38-35 Tigers. Clemson sealed the victory by recovering the onside kick.
