First Answers on Clemson's QB Battle Could Come Early Next Week

One of the hottest topics in college football this summer has been the Clemson quarterback competition. The Tigers have Kelly Bryant back after leading the team to a 12-2 overall record and a College Football Playoff appearance. For most programs, there wouldn't be a question surrounding the position. Yet, with freshman Trevor Lawrence on campus with high expectations from many, Clemson is flooded with them.

We are now less than two weeks away from the first kickoff against Furman on September 1st, and the questions are still piling up.

While speaking with the media on Monday, Coach Dabo Swinney said that the team's depth chart against Furman will be released soon. “We will pretty much set the depth chart on how we are going to go into (the Furman) game,” Swinney said. “We will probably put out a depth chart probably on Monday. That is probably when we will release it.”

The next week's depth chart will be truly telling of who the Clemson coaching staff has the most confidence in right now as the starting quarterback. With Texas A&M awaiting Clemson in College Station for an early season showdown on September 8th, the Tigers will have to perform at their best in a tough road environment.

I don't expect much seperation among the group against Furman, but whomever is the standout against the Aggies, may have the job secured for a few weeks. Although he has said that the gap has closed in the position battle between Kelly Bryant and Trevor Lawrence, Swinney has also added that "this is a situation where if somebody separates, it is probably going to take place in the games.”

Co-Offensive Coordinator Jeff Scott also spoke with the media and added that “that may be the depth chart going into the Furman game. There are a lot of times where there is a lot of movement on the depth chart from that first game to the second game based off production and how guys play.

Clemson begins the season inside of Memorial Stadium at 12:20 pm on September 1st against Furman.
