Gamecocks Continue Success in the Classroom

The University of South Carolina athletic program ranks second in the Southeastern Conference in the latest Graduation Success Rate, released Wednesday by the NCAA.

The Graduation Success Rate measures the number of scholarship student-athletes that graduate within a six-year period of their initial full-time enrollment.

For this report, the rates are based on student-athletes who entered college in the fall of 2012. The rate shows the percentage of student-athletes who earned a degree by the spring of 2018. The four-year cohort of student-athletes who began college in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 is also included.

South Carolina's athletic teams had a 94 percent score, which is second in the SEC behind only Vanderbilt (97) in the GSR, and second in the state of South Carolina, behind only Wofford (96). Of the over 350 schools in NCAA Division I, South Carolina's score tied for 51st overall. South Carolina's Football GSR score (92) ranked second among SEC schools, tied for first among South Carolina schools (Wofford) and tied for sixth among all FBS schools.

Men's Basketball, Men's Golf, Men's Track and Field, Women's Basketball, Women's Golf, Women's Swimming and Diving, Women's Tennis, and Volleyball all had perfect GSR scores (100).

"While we want to win in competition at a high level, the importance of succeeding in the classroom and graduating is the priority," said Athletics Director Ray Tanner. "Our student-athletes dedicate themselves to excellence on the field and the classroom and its shows in this report. I congratulate our student-athletes on their academic performance. I appreciate the work of our Office of Academic Services and Student Development, under the direction of Maria Hickman, for preparing our student-athletes for graduation and on a course for lifetime achievement."

Gamecock Athletics has a track record of academic success, having led the Southeastern Conference in total number of Academic Honor Roll student-athletes in 2018-19 as well as the last four years collectively. Carolina student-athletes have also achieved a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher in 25 straight semesters.

Clemson Athletics Continues GSR Success

Clemson Athletics earned an overall 91 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for the 2009-12 cohort in data released by the NCAA on Wednesday. It’s the sixth consecutive cohort in which Clemson’s department-wide GSR was at 91% or higher.

“We are proud of our student-athletes for attaining their Clemson degrees while members of our athletic program,” said Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich. “Graduation Success Rate not only takes into their hard work, but also the support provided by IPTAY, the staff at the Nieri Family Student-Athlete Enrichment Center and our coaches, who value academic performance.”

Among public institutions, Clemson’s department rate was second in the ACC and eighth in the Power Five. Six programs earned perfect 100% GSR scores - baseball, men’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s tennis and volleyball, with women’s cross country/track (96), women’s soccer (96) and rowing (95) also among the top performers.
