CLEMSON, SC -- The opponent wasn't great but the way the Tigers handled their business was. Clemson finished off their five-game home stretch and final November home game in exciting fashion. They finished off winless Alabama A&M by a score of 87-51, improving to 4-1 on the season as they get set to head to Las Vegas for the 2019 MGM Resorts Main Event Tournament.
They will play TCU on Sunday at 10:30 pm and then the winner between Colorado and Wyoming on Tuesday (Time TBA).
As for this game, Clemson did what it was supposed to do. They dominated a bad team from start to finish and got some good minutes from their bench as well.
Freshman guard, Chase Hunter, did not play in this game. Grad transfer Curran Scott took his spot in the starting lineup.
Al-Amir Dawes finished with a career high in points with 19; shot 11/17 and finished with FIVE rebounds, TWO assists, and TWO steals.
The best moment in the game was when walk-on, Wells Hoag, who was just moved to the active roster, got in the game and made his first two shots along with getting an offensive board. He finished with FIVE points on 2/3 shooting with ONE rebound in just EIGHT minutes of play.
“You know it’s funny. It’s kind of an interesting story. He’s a guy who was a Bridge student his first year, so this is his first year at Clemson," Brownell told the media in his postgame press conference. "Now, he’s a part of the team. We already have a lot of walk-ons, so we’ve done this with a couple of guys where they become manager. We know this is a guy who could become a walk-on next year."
"You need to earn your spurs and see if you really want to do it for the right reasons. He’s been great, and he’s worked really hard. We put it into motion, and it took about a week to get him where he could actually play in a game. We’ve been working on it. He only knows about a quarter or a third of the playbook. Physically, he’s a pretty good-sized kid. He’s a bright kid. He’s competed very hard and done stuff with our guys. He showed today that he can play a little bit. He was very good. All those guys did a very good job out there.”
The schedule gets tougher from here but the Tigers seem to have found some chemistry and confidence in their play.
