How Efficient has Trevor Lawrence been with Deep Ball?

CLEMSON -- As most know by now, Trevor Lawrence has been named the starter for the Syracuse game on Saturday.

The talented frosh looked good through the first three games but still did not look completely ready to run the offense as the starter. After the Georgia Tech game though, the coaches decided he now was.

So far in his young Clemson campaign, Lawrence is 39/60 (65%) passing for 600 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions.

Coming into the program, the hype around him was palpable. His arm strength and accuracy were the biggest talking points.

His ability to stretch the field with the deep ball enamored people long before he stepped on campus. But it has done nothing but blossom since his first reps in spring practice.

Clemson fans want the passing game to open up more than it did last season and the general public thought was that Trevor was the one to make that happen.

Through one-third of the season so far, Trevor has been very efficient when throwing down the field. Dabo alluded to the fact in his weekly press conference stating, “He has an elite, elite ability to push the ball downfield.”

I decided to chart every deep pass Trevor has made so far this season.

**Disclaimer on how I got & measured these numbers.**

- Deep ball is a pass that travels 20+ yards downfield through the air; line of scrimmage is not a factor in this formula

- Completion rate does not include throw aways in which ball traveled required distance

- Yardage is based solely from where pass is thrown to where it is caught; does not include yards after catch

- Touchdowns are counted if it occurred off of a deep pass even if it wasn’t caught in the endzone; balls actually caught in the endzone are pointed out separately as well
